Some pictures:
Hot springs and steam vents cover this volcanic area (the
most recent eruption was about 600 years ago). Over time this volcanic
activity have increased the concentrations of the salts and minerals in the
lake, making it inhospitable for most species.
As the water level has dropped, spires and knobs of calcium
carbonate called 'Tufa' have been exposed; this brings most tourists to the
area.
